The Elimination Diet and Corona; a Love Story Part 1
Ok, let’s just cut to the meat and potatoes here: being stuck inside and not being able to socialize with your friends sucks, A LOT. But when I thought about it, I realized this is the perfect time to do an elimination diet! The hardest part of an elimination diet is eating out and social situations - BOOM! Those are already off the table so you might as well go all in, what’s to lose? I know what you are thinking, this whole situation blows, and I’m suggesting you do something that will make things worse?? Hear me out.
Do you have weird gastrointestinal problems? Arthritis that comes and goes? Acne? Migraines? Headaches? Joint pain from nowhere? Insomnia? Fatigue? Unexplained aliments that your doctor can’t attribute to anything? Well, my friend, you are in luck because it sounds like your body is begging for an elimination diet! The basic premise is that a lot of food insensitivities and intolerances can cause all of the things above and a laundry list of other problems. I’m sure there is a pill for that BUT wouldn’t it be nice to not have to take a pill and stop the problem rather than treating the symptom FOREVER? I agree - elimination diet is a much better plan. And besides, you have the time. Where are you running off to?? That’s right, nowhere fast! So capitalize on the situation. Why ruin a perfectly good happy hour with co-workers after corona when you can take care of this all now?
This will take 20 - 30 days depending on your symptoms. You can adjust as needed but the most likely culprits you want eliminate from your diet are gluten, dairy, corn/corn products, additives/preservatives, and peanuts. Things you can choose to exclude if you have an inkling they may also be a problem include soy, eggs, shellfish, nightshades, and foods you eat more than 3 times a week. I know this is a lot to wrap your head around but since you need a great distraction at the moment, let’s power through!
