Episode 52 Fuel Pillar

Order of Operations: What I Wish I Knew About My Gut with Kara Siedman (Part 3)

For years, the advice for gut problems has sounded the same: add more fiber, then add more fiber. As I shared in Part 1, what finally worked for my own gut was the opposite order. I supported my digestion first, and only then expanded my diet. If your body cannot break fiber down, piling more on can leave you feeling worse, and in perimenopause, when your immune system and histamine response are already stirred up, that reaction can hit even harder.

That is why I wanted Part 3 of my conversation with Kara Siedman, registered dietitian and VP of Science and Partnerships at resbiotic, to be about order of operations. Kara describes herself as a gut-first dietitian, not a diet-first one, and explains why adding diet stress to someone who has been suffering for a while can backfire. We talk about when to calm symptoms first, how to make fermented foods work if you do not love them (her miso toast is now on my weekend list), and how Kara went from a hospital dietitian to a gut microbiome specialist.

This episode touches the Fuel pillar of the Perimenopause Matrix: what you eat matters, and so does whether you can sustain it. Kara closes with three takeaways for the week, including why gut health is about more than bloating, why the best diet is the one you can keep doing, and how to double-click before you buy.

“The best diet is the diet that we can sustain.”

What You’ll Learn

  • →Why “just add more fiber” is not always step one, and how to think about order of operations with your gut
  • →Why Kara calls herself a gut-first dietitian, and when calming symptoms comes before diet changes
  • →How to get the benefits of fermented foods even if you do not love them, including Kara’s miso toast idea
  • →How Kara went from hospital dietitian to GI clinic to microbiome specialist
  • →Kara’s three takeaways: gut health is more than GI symptoms, the best diet is one you can sustain, and double-click before you buy

Key Takeaways

  • ✓Notice gut signals beyond bloating and gas: sleep, mood, energy, cravings, or metabolic changes that do not budge even when you eat and exercise well
  • ✓Choose the version of a diet change you can keep doing; Kara leans on an 80:20 mindset and better substitutions instead of fear of food
  • ✓If you do not love fermented foods, change how you eat them: red miso on sourdough with eggs and microgreens, or low-effort sauerkraut and pickles
  • ✓If you are really struggling, ask a practitioner what could calm symptoms first (even just getting you pooping), then do the deeper diet work
  • ✓Before you buy a supplement, double-click: check the company website for third-party testing, certifications, and real clinical studies
